Hi
Everyone
When
you are ready to step up and take your life to the next level, I
will be honored to be your guide on this incredible journey of self
growth and illumination. Lori
Surviving
an Affair
The
breakup of any marriage is difficult, but making the decision to
save a marriage can sometimes honestly be more difficult. Is it
worth it? Is going through the pain worth it?
Although
a low percentage of couples do survive the affair, those who decide
to do the work that is necessary, and I mean work consistently say
it was the best thing that ever happened to their relationship.
They end up being a stronger and more well adjusted and connected
couple after the affair.
Now,
I'm not suggesting that you have an affair to fix a troubled marriage,
but I am suggesting that it does not mean the relationship is over.
It is extremely important to find a counselor or coach who is willing
to get involved and open up the messy wounds of the affair, not
just gloss over it or concentrate on marital communication and processes.
Delving into the affair is necessary before knowing whether or not
a relationship can be saved, and you may have to do your research
to find someone who can help you.
Whether
the marriage is saved or not, an affair can affect you in every
future relationship, so make sure you really deal with all the issues.
I
did some research about infidelity recently, and not surprisingly,
the numbers are all over the place. From 5 - 25% of men cheating,
and 3 - 15% of women cheating on their marital partners. With all
the emphasis we place on monogamy and infidelity, and media attention
(Tiger Woods, Jesse James, Governor Mark Sanford), I was pleased
and surprised to learn the numbers are actually much lower.
It
turns out that most affairs come from work relationships. Dr. Scott
Haltzman says, "Seventy-three percent of unfaithful men meet their
mistresses at work. Most people don't choose to have an affair;
some may even be morally opposed to affairs. Frequently it starts
with a conversation. Then, it moves to a conversation about intimate
issues and experiences in each person's own relationship. The distance
between meeting someone and a first kiss is much longer than the
distance between a first kiss and ending up in bed. It's a slippery
slope, and you make choices all along the way."
I
know Dr. Phil has done a number of shows on infidelity and the fact
that it is a choice someone makes, it doesn't just happen accidently.
It's good to keep in mind, that the road to that first kiss is much
longer than the one between the kiss and bedroom.
So...
make the right choice, don't have a first kiss and if you want to
have an affair, John Gray, Author of Men are from Mars, Women are
from Venus, suggests you tell your spouse, you want to have an affair
with them and get help for your marriage. Now is a good time!
